It's paraffin, which is what they coat apples with to make them shiny.  Lots of hard candy is paraffin based.  Waxed cotton biodegrades in less than a year.  It's not gunna fall apart on your bike, but when it's clapped out in 20 years, put it in your compost pile.  Put almost any other front roll in your compost pile, and you're not growing flowers with it for over 200 years.  Polyester doesn't biodegrade really, it just turns into smaller pieces of polyester.
