The Catamount is of course the Vermont mountain lion, the majestic and occasionally terrifying large cat that once (and according to many still does) roamed the Green Mountains.
Fifth Season Canvas makes this cataMOUNT front roll sack. It's pretty similar to all of th other front rolls out there, you can only do so much with what is essentially just a stuff sack. Here's a few reasons to consider this bag over 97% of the other front rolls. It's waxed cotton. The wax is inert. You can eat it. It's paraffin, which is what they coat apples with to make them shiny. Lots of hard candy is paraffin based. Waxed cotton biodegrades in less than a year. It's not gunna fall apart on your bike, but when it's clapped out in 20 years, put it in your compost pile. Put almost any other front roll in your compost pile, and you're not growing flowers with it for over 200 years. Polyester doesn't biodegrade really, it just turns into smaller pieces of polyester. What's Xpac made of? Polyester. Dyneema doesn't degrade. It's just trash forever. Fun! We need less of that, I reckon.
It's easy to repair a waxed cotton bag. Also easy (or pretty easy) to rewax one in 5 years if the wax is getting a bit thin. Wanna be all eco conscious about it? Just use bee's wax.
Metal G hook closures mean you will never have to deal with a broken buckle. There's a number of daisy chains on the bag which help with mounting the bag itself, and also allow you to mount a Fifth Season Fanny Allen, Trillium or Bulldog to the front of the cataMOUNT as a quick access accessory bag.
The cataMOUNT sack loads from both sides. Handy for high loft down items, like sleeping bags. You can also use the dual closures to adjust the width of the bag, so you can use the bag on different widths of handlebars. Have a flat bar? Run the bag wide. Have a narrow drop bar? Roll in the sides more, to get hand clearance on the hoods.
